Black Shanxi Two Door Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1880
Originally this two door cabinet would have sat on top of a larger armoire in a similar style, providing additional storage space in a reception or bedroom of a Chinese home. As is usually the case, it has been separated over the years from the larger cabinet and today would make a great little sideboard or storage cupboard. It comes from Shanxi province and, unusually, still has its original finish, paintings and heavy brass hardware. The black lacquer has worn over time, resulting in a wonderful crackled appearance, whilst the paintings are now quite faded but still visible. The cabinet has a single shelf inside, which is removable.
