Black Painted Antique Chinese Sideboard
Qinghai, circa 1880
This striking sideboard in pine wood is from the far western province of Qinghai. What we liked most about it is the fact that, rather than being overly restored and varnished, it still shows its original finish, including all the scars and wear of its more than hundred year history. The style is a good example of Qinghai furniture. Two doors are set centrally, with a fixed panel either side. On most similar cabinets these panels are converted into additional doors, so it is nice to see a piece like this in its original design. The black lacquer finish is original, now severely worn in parts. The paintings are also entirely original but now very faded. These show flowers and valued possessions, as well as butterflies around the edges of the outer panels - a symbol in China for marital happiness. The brass handles and hardware are the only new additions to this piece and it would bring character to any home as a dining room sideboard or as a statement piece in a reception room.
