Black Lacquer Chinese Temple Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1860
Still in its original, now worn, black lacquer finish, this wonderful mid sized cabinet hails from Shanxi in central China. The doors are mounted using wooden dowels to give an uninterrupted, pure look. There is a lovely floral design in carved relief adorning the drawer front, picked out in a red lacquer - now worn and darkened but still providing a nice contrast with the surrounding black. Made from elm wood and with a single removable shelf inside, the cabinet is perfect for characterful storage in any space today.
