Black Lacquer Shanxi Sideboard
Shanxi, circa 1880
This is a lovely example of a 'double cabinet' in a style that is particular to Shanxi province in central China - a region famous for the quality of its lacquered and painted furniture. The cabinet has an extended lid with carved spandrels at either side, picked out in red. The black lacuqer finish is original, now with a lovely worn, crackled look. The once bright paintings, now in softer reds and oranges, are also old and show various flowers, birds and butterflies - symbols for long life and happiness. There are also circular long life symbols in green on the central and outer frames. Unusually, the hinges and door hardware in this case are also old, though the handles on the two small drawers in the fixed shelves insde are new. As an extra decorative element, there is a carved frame at the top of each interior section. A beautiful antique cabinet in a style that is becoming more and more difficult to find.
