Black Lacquer Painted Storage Sideboard
Qinghai, circa 1900
This stunning painted storage cabinet comes from Qinghai province in western China. It is finished in a black lacquer and still has its original paintings on the doors of flower vases on stands. A faded scroll adorns the lower left panel and three of the drawers have a scrolling frame pattern in gold. A further decorative element is the carving on the spandrels at either side of the cabinet, which taper down to the shaped feet. The configuration of the cabinet is original, along with the lacquer and paintings - something that is now quite rare to find in furniture from Qinghai and Gansu. A very unusual piece, this would make a wonderful statement piece in any setting.
