Black Lacquer Merchant Chest
Gansu, circa 1900
Once used by a travelling merchant, this lovely little chest is a nice size to use a side table next to a bed or sofa. It still has the original Chinese characters on the front set on a red background, as well as the central character, which is a symbol for luck and prosperity. The two holes towards the bottom of the chest were designed for metal rods to pass through for easier carrying, secured using the two small rings on the front.
