Black Lacquer Hebei Cabinet
Hebei, circa 1900
Sourced from Hebei province near Beijing, this black lacquer cabinet is slightly unusual in style, with a single drawer set centrally below the doors and an overhanging top. Robustly made to withstand the extreme winters and summers around northern China, it is made from elm wood, with the door hardware and drawer handle replacements for the originals. Like the drawer, the doors are set centrally within rounded frames, fitted on wooden dowel hinges into the frames above and below. The thick, rounded legs extend up into the top of the cabinet, with a plain apron between the feet. The sleek lines and dark lacquer finish would fit easily into a modern or traditional interior and, with a single removable shelf inside, the cabinet would make a great little sideboard.
