Chinese Bench with Rattan Seat
Shanxi, circa 1800
This simple Chinese bench is unusual in that it still has the old rattan panel set into the top, the pale colour and texture providing a lovely contrast with the darker lacquer that surrounds it. The waisted top frame, S shaped stretchers and horse hoof feet are all typical features of Chinese stools and benches. A beautifully preserved item that belies its age, the bench would make a lovely side table or even a coffee table between a pair of sofas.
