Beijing Side Cabinet, Antique Chinese
Beijing, circa 1850
This sturdy side cabinet dates from the mid 19th century and unusually still has all of its original, heavy brass hardware. It is made from elm and the black lacquer finish is also original. The plain, solid looking style is typical of pieces produced in and around Beijing, where most furniture was made to be robust to withstand the changes in climate. There is therefore very little decoration. There is a removable centre post between the two doors and a single removable shelf on the inside.
