Beech and Rosewood End Cabinet
Suzhou, circa 1900
The frames and doors on this beautifully crafted cabinet are made from different woods - Rosewood and Beech - to give an attractive two tone effect. It was not uncommon for Chinese furniture to use different woods in this way, particularly in the South, to create a visually appealing look with different colours and textures. In this case the doors are further decorated with shapes in marble set into carved recesses. With two upper drawers and a large cupboard space, the cabinet would provide attractive storage in a bedroom or living room.
