Bamboo Field Hat
Yunnan, circa 1900
These old hats would have been worn originally by farm labourers when working in the fields. Made from bamboo, the wide brim provided protection from the sun. The hats are from Yunnan province, southwest China (on the border with Laos and Myanmar), a region famous for its beautiful mountains, lakes and terraced rice fields, as well as for it large ethnic minority populations. They make unusual ornaments mounted on a wall. Sold individually, each one varies slightly in size and design.
