Antique Walnut Wine Table
Gansu, circa 1800
This side table is from Gansu in western China. Made from walnut, the lacquer has been stripped back so that the colour is of the natural wood, with its beautiful striations and patina. This type of table is often referred to as a 'wine table' but in fact would have been used both for serving food and drink but also as a more general purpose work surface. The style is quite rustic, with a chunky top surface and thick, rounded legs supported by double stretchers. What is nice here is that the intricacy of the carpenter's joinery, even on a serviceable piece like this, is clearly visible - with the ends of tenon joints showing in the top frame, table top and where the stretchers are fitted.
