Antique Mongolian Painted Bench
Mongolia, circa 1900
This lovely, long bench is from Inner Mongolia in the far north of China and, like most furniture from that region, is made from pine wood. It is beautifully decorated on the spandrels with paintings of flowers and trees - the now muted blues, greens and yellows being a classic palette of colours used in Mongolian furniture. Antique furniture from this area is now quite scarce, partly because not much has survived China's turbulent recent history but also because not much was made to start with in an area traditionally inhabited by nomadic people. This is therefore a very unique piece and would work well perhaps at the end of a bed or in a reception area.
