Antique Three Drawer Kang Table
Shanxi, circa 1840
This low table would work well as a coffee table with the three drawers offering storage for remotes or magazines. The drawer fronts and spandrels have a simple carved decoration. Remnants of the original red and black lacquer can still be seen although largely worn away especially on the top surface. The table is from Shanxi in north central China, where it would have been used originally on a kang - the raised platform, heated from below, that formed the everyday living space in China's northern provinces.
