Antique Elm Wood Bench
Shanxi, circa 1850
This long, narrow bench would be great for extra seating at the end of a bed or perhaps in a window alcove. It is typical of the wooden benches used throughout China for centuries, both in homes and outdoors. They were often seen placed outside restaurants, shops or other small businesses, for use by customers or staff to take a rest and enjoy the fresh air. As a result they are sometimes referred to as 'Spring benches'. This one is from Shanxi province and, like much of the furniture from the region, is made from elm wood. The style is classically Chinese, with the A-frame, moulded legs slotting directly into the bench seat with tenons.
