Antique Elm Bench
Shanxi, circa 1900
Traces of the original dark lacquer finish on this old bench are still visible around the top of the legs where they fit through carved spandrels, but the finish has largely worn away on the top surface and legs to show the natural, pale elm wood underneath. The bench is in a classic Chinese style, with splayed legs, supported by double stretchers, fitting directly into an overhanging thick seat. The four tenon ends where the legs fit through the seat are visible on the top surface, indicating the accurate joinery used in even a simple item of furniture like this. Originally used for indoor or outdoor seating, benches like this were often seen outside shops or other small businesses in China. Great as a side table next to a sofa, for seating at the end of a bed or as a window seat.
