Antique Chinese Round Cornered Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1880
This simple storage cabinet is in a classic 'round cornered' style that was common throughout China. The ingenious design incorporates doors fitted on wooden dowels that slot directly into the top and bottom frames, doing away with the need for external metal hinges and giving a very pure, minimal look. Rounded posts are fitted directly into the extended cabinet top and taper out slightly to form the cabinet's feet, adding a sense of fluidity.
Like much of the furniture that was produced in Shanxi province, the cabinet is made from elm and still has the original dark lacquer finish. This has warn over the years to develop a lovely patina that shows off the age and character developed over decades of use. The top surface and feet in particular are worn to the more natural colour of the elm wood beneath. Unusually the circular hardware and handles on the doors here are old rather than recent replacements. The cabinet has a fixed shelf inside with two small drawers. A classic, timeless Chinese design that would add a sense of history and interest to any setting.
