Antique Chinese Opera Chest
Shanxi, circa 1900
This once brightly coloured chest would have started life as an 'opera trunk' - used by a travelling troupe of Chinese opera singers as they toured the villages around Shanxi province. The colours are now faded to more subtle shades of green, pink and orange. The paintings on these trunks often depict scenes from one of the operas the troupe were performing but this one shows peony flowers in the centre (a symbol of high rank), flanked by flower vases and good luck symbols. Still in its original deep proportions and with the old hardware, the chest would provide plenty of useful storage space in a bedroom or living room.
