Antique Chinese Elm Painting Table
Shanxi, circa 1860
This lovely old table still has traces of the original thick dark lacquer on the top surface, with a wonderful crackled patina. The wood underneath is elm with a central panel fitted into thick surrounding frames. Referred to as a 'painting table' this type of table would actually have been multipurpose, used not only for painting or calligraphy but also as a more general work surface or for display. With three stretchers between each set of legs and a simply shaped apron where the legs fit into the top, it is in a very original condition and oozes character. It would make a real statement piece as a large console in a hallway or reception room.
