The contrasting colours and uneven texture give the surface a lovely depth, with particularly striking markings across the frame and panelled sides.

The two broad doors retain faded paintings of vases holding flowers and foliage, with touches of green, ochre and red still visible against the dark background. Although softened by wear, these delicate designs add interest to the cabinet’s otherwise simple form. Small metal drop handles have been fitted as replacements for the old hardware, with a noticeable oval shaped area where the original backplate would have been fitted - the black lacquer and gold line detail heer being less worn than elsewhere. Simple straight legs and a subtly shaped lower arpon complete the cabinet's restrained design.

A lovely cabinet for a living room or dining room, offering useful storage and space on top for a lamp, photographs other favourite objects. Its warm wood tones and dark finish would contrast beautifully against paler walls, or sit comfortably within a richer colour palette of darker walls and wooden floors.
