This beautifully painted trunk is from Gansu in western China and made from pine. The front panels are finely painted with two vases filled with vibrant flowers, the colours darkened and softened to a muted, autumnal palette that would blend easily into any interior. The main decoration, set within a black border, is full of symbolic meaning, reflecting the artistic traditions and refined craftsmanship of the period.

Each panel on the trunk shows a vase ('ping') — a homonym in Chinese for “peace” — filled with large, colourful blooms including peonies and lilies. The peony, regarded as the “king of flowers,” symbolises wealth, honour and prosperity, while lilies are associated with purity and harmony. Together with the vases they convey auspicious wishes for a peaceful and prosperous life. The painted border around the panels features scrolling floral motifs and delicate inscriptions in Chinese characters. These inscriptions are poetic blessings, referring to the virtues of beauty, elegance, and natural grace — sentiments often used to decorate furniture made for a refined household.

The chest’s lacquer has aged gracefully, with areas of natural wear that enhance its rich patina and authenticity. The interior remains plain and spacious, originally used for storing bed linens or clothing. The hinged lid lifts easily, revealing the natural wood within.

Today, this chest would make a stunning coffee table, blanket box, or storage chest, adding subtle colour and charm to any room. Its hand-painted decoration, warm tones and history make it not only a practical piece but also a wonderful example of Chinese folk art and symbolism.
