The painted details have softened with age, with darker patches, scratches and areas of exposed wood giving the surface a wonderfully mellow character. The darker finish on the lid and sides contrasts with the red front, while a round metal lock plate with a shaped clasp provides a central focal point.

The hinged lid opens to reveal a spacious, undivided interior, which would have been used to store bedding and other household textiles. Today, the chest would be ideal at the foot of a bed for blankets and spare linen. Its height and proportions also make it well suited to use as a coffee table, bringing warm colour and antique character to a living room, with useful storage space inside.
