The irregular wear gives the surface a wonderful depth and texture, with the bold colour softened by years of use. A large rectangular metal lock plate - a more recent replacement for the original - and simple clasp contrast with the deep red front, while three recessed panels above a broad plinth base add subtle detail to the otherwise plain design.

The hinged lid lifts to reveal a generous, undivided interior, likely once used for storing bedding, clothing and other household textiles. Today, the trunk would provide useful storage for blankets and spare linen in a bedroom, or for throws in a living room. With its simple lines, strong colour and beautifully weathered surface, it would bring warmth and character to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
