The lacquer has been distressed to reveal darker tones and the texture of the old wood, giving the frame a lovely weathered appearance. Its pale colour provides a gentle contrast to the warm ochre backgrounds of the three decorative door panels.

The door panels show arrangements of flower-filled vases, books and other decorative objects, picked out in muted reds, greens and blues. A seated figure below a tree - possibly the Buddha - occupies the central door, adding variety to the painted front. Dark borders and moulded frames define each panel, while simple metal drop handles complete the restrained design. Originally the doors would have been fixed panels, with the interior of the unit accessed by removing half boards in the top. These boards have been sealed as part of the restoration process, and the front panels adapted into doors for more practical storage.

With three doors providing access to the cupboard storage, the sideboard would be a lovely choice in a dining room for tableware or linen, or for general storage in a living room. Its broad top offers space for lamps and to display photographs and favourite ceramics, while the delicate paintings bring colour and interest to the soft grey finish.
