Traces of the old, once brightly coloured lacquer is still evident on the spandrels, including a blue pigment on the vases. When the coffer was produced only the two upper drawers would have been included. The space behind the lower panels could only have been accessed by removing these, and would have been used to hold especially prized or valuable items. The fronts of the two upper drawers are set in moulded frames and fitted with simple brass ring handles. Similarly, bats are often shown upside down as the character for this (pronounced 'dao') is a synonym for the character meaning to have arrived. Saying 'the bat flies upside down' therefore sounds the same as 'good fortune is coming'! This type of chair, named for its grand looking curved rail in a horseshoe shape, were reserved for important house guests.
