Chinese Antique Opera Trunk
Shanxi, circa 1900
This wonderfully painted trunk was produced for an opera troupe in Shanxi province, with the colourful paintings on the front depicting a dramatic scene from one of the operas they would perform. As the players travelled the countryside this would act as a kind of advert for promoting their show to the locals. The main, central painting on this one shows various characters from the opera dressed in elaborate costumes. This is framed with various brightly coloured flowers and a pair of vases to the side. The trunk is made from a wood known as 'wutong' in Chinese. The tree is also referred to as a parasol tree or phoenix tree as it was though to be favoured by the mythical bird. It was often planted in the courtyard of a Chinese home in the belief that the phoenix would come and bring luck to the family.
