Painted Buffet with Landscapes
Gansu, circa 1900
This long sideboard is from the western Chinese province of Gansu and was originally made to hold rice or grain. The doors have been converted from what were once fixed panels and three removable boards in the top - once the only way to access the inside - have been sealed. On each door are the original paintings in sepia tones of landscapes with characters, worn over the decades but still visible. Each square section is framed on the outside in a black. The thick cabinet frames and top surface are in red, adding further contrast to the front of the cabinet. With removable shelves and ample storage space inside, this would be ideal for adding impact and interest to any room.
