Red Lacquer Sideboard With Landscape Paintings
Gansu, circa 1920
This beautiful sideboard is from Gansu province in western China, once used to store grain or other foods. The paintings on the doors are actually new, but very much in keeping with the original decoration, showing classic Chinese landscapes of trees set against a background of mountains. The darkened cream of the doors and three drawers blends beautifully with the vibrant red lacquer of the extended top surface, side panels and chunky frames. The door and drawers handles are new and removable shelves have been added to the interior. With its generous proportions, this would make a very striking sideboard in a dining room or provide plenty of storage space in a living room.
