This unusual display cabinet dates from the early 20th century but has been refinished in a distressed grey-green lacquer. It comes from Jiangsu province to the north of Shanghai, and would have been used originally to place cooked food inside ready for serving. The lattice panels in the front and sides allowed steam to escape. The random lattice work on the front of the doors is known in Chinese as a 'cracked ice' pattern and is often seen in larger window panels or dividers. The cabinet has three fixed shelves inside and a small door at the bottom allows access to the lower storage compartment.
