Red and Gold Decorative Sideboard
Dongbei, circa 1900
This lovely red lacquer cabinet is in a style that is particular to the Dongbei region of northeast China. In a simple, square cornered style and with brass door hardware, the original, worn red finish is decorated in gold with flowers and various geometric patterns along with butterflies - a symbol in China for long life and marital happiness. Originally the central doors would have been mounted on metal hinges and the area where these were fitted can be clearly seen. These have been replaced with wooden dowel hinges and the two outer panels have also been converted into doors for easier access. The central post between the doors can be removed.
