Dongbei Red Painted Sideboard
Dongbei, circa 1900
This stunning sideboard is in a style particular to China's northeast region of Dongbei. Cabinets like this were used traditionally as altar tables, with offerings being placed on top and family ancestor portraits hung above. The cabinets would be finished in a red lacquer and brightly painted in gold and other colours with flowers and geometric patterns. This one shows various flowers set within rectangular and diamond shaped frames on the doors, with more flowers and two 'double happiness' symbols on the bottom apron. A small brass stud is fitted on each outer frame - a common feature on these cabinets. Originally only the central doors would have been in place, but here the fixed panels either side have been opened up and hinged with wooden dowels to allow full access to the inside. There is a removable centre post between the middle doors. This is a lovely example of Dongbei furniture and would make a real conversation piece in a reception room or as a dining room sideboard.
