Black Lacquer Low Storage Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1860
This useful little low cabinet would have originally been used for everyday storage, placed on the heated kang platform of a home in Shanxi province, central China. It still has its original black lacquer finish, now worn and faded to show the lighter colour of the wood in places. The brass handles are also old. With two small drawers and a central pair of doors with matching carving around the top and sides, the cabinet is a great size today to be used as a TV stand, or could even serve as an unusual coffee table.
