Red Lacquer Painted Shanxi Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1860
This beautiful red lacquer cabinet is from Shanxi province in central China, still with its original finish and wonderful old paintings. The paintings would once have been overlaid with a bright gold leaf in a technique know in Chinese as 'miao jin'. Over the years the gold has worn away, leaving the darker base paintings underneath. These show a simple landscape and scenes of figures on foot and on horseback. The three panels below the doors are similarly decorated with paintings of flowers. The style, with an extended lid and panels set back within the frames, is distinctive of Shanxi furniture. The original hardware has been replaced with simple rings. There is a single removable shelf inside.
