Chinese Elm End Cabinet
Beijing, circa 1880
Built with thick, solid frames and panels to withstand the changeable climate of China's capital, this is a nice example of Beijing furniture. Like most pieces from the region, the material is elm wood, and the cabinet still has its original heavy brass hardware. The original dark lacquer is also still visible, though now largely worn down to the paler natural elm on the front of the cabinet. A central post divides the two doors, but this can be removed to allow larger items to be placed inside. The cabinet has a single shelf inside.
