Double Painted Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1860
The decoration and style of this beautiful sideboard are of a type distinctive to Shanxi province. It incorporates a double set of doors, with heavy brass hinges and circular door hardware. Once in more vivid black and red with bright paintings, the colours have darkened and softened over time to give a more subtle finish. The highly detailed paintings on the doors and lower panels show various flowers, vases and personal possessions - designed to show the status of the owner. The old lacquer has worn around the feet and joins but is large intact. there also appears to be an old repair to the left hand door. There are further paintings on the inside of each of the four doors, and the cabinet has two removable shelves inside. This style of cabinet in original condition is now quite rare, and would make a wonderful statement piece in a hallway, dining or living room.
