Decorated Shanxi Wedding Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1850
This gorgeous cabinet is a fine example of the black or red lacquer armoires that Shanxi province in central China is famous for. These are usually referred to today as wedding cabinets, as they were often given as part of a wedding settlement by the bride's family, along with the silks and other gifts that were held inside. Dating from the mid 19th century, this one unusually still has its original decoration - beautiful 'miao jin' style gilded paintings that depict a village landscape of trees, rivers and houses. The paintings are now quite faded, with the delicate gold worn in many areas to leave only the more durable black under tones, but the overall pattern can still be made out. There are further decorative elements on the bottom panel and outer frame, showing simple floral designs. As well as the paintings, the brass circular hardware on the doors is also old, making this piece a now quite rare acquisition. A wonderful way to add brightness and character to any bedroom or living area.
