Pair of Walnut Yoke-Back Armchairs
Shanxi, circa 1850
One of the earliest and most successful styles of chair to develop in China, the 'Yoke-Back' style is characterised by its wide, yoke shaped top rail, subtly curved back rest and curved arms that protrude beyond their vertical supports. This pair date from the mid 19th century and are made in walnut wood, a less common material than the ubiquitous elm that has a lovely colour and tone. In this case the top rails of the chairs are squared rather than the more usual round shape. The legs are supported with double stretchers at each side and a low footrest. The original black lacquer is still visible in places, but is now largely worn away exposing the paler wood itself. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two chairs.
