Long Narrow Altar Table
Shanxi, circa 1810
The original dark red lacquer of this striking table has worn and crackled over the years to leave a distinctive pattern, similar to the markings on a giraffe. Patches of the red, now darkened and muted to brown, contrast with the paler elm wood that lies underneath. At over three metres in length the table would need a large space to house it but would provide an extremely impressive focal point. It comes from Shanxi province where it was made around 200 years ago and would have been used as the stage for ancestral offerings in the central hall of a Chinese home. The recessed legs are topped with cloud shaped spandrels, a typical feature of altar tables from the period. A truly stunning piece that would dominate any space.
