Narrow Antique Elm Console
Shanxi, circa 1900
This narrow console is from Shanxi in central China, made from elm wood. The design is very pure - similar in style to the simple, refined furniture produced using precious hardwoods for the wealthiest echelons of society during the Ming dynasty. The legs are fitted flush to the the ends of the table top and taper down slightly to the classic horse hoof shaped feet. Restored with a clear varnish, the dark wood stain brings out the beautiful, rich character of the elm. At less than a foot wide, the table would fit easily into any space as an elegant console.
