Round Cornered Dark Elm Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1870
This beautiful, sleek cabinet is in a classic Chinese style referred to as 'round cornered' due to the rounded frames that extend down to the feet. An extended top sits over these frames and doors are set directly into the top and into a frame below using wooden dowels. With no external metal hinges necessary, this gives a very simple, fluid look that is further emphasised by the slight taper from the bottom to the top.
The cabinet is made from elm wood, like much of the better quality furniture produced in Shanxi province in central China over centuries. More unusually, it includes two small drawers below the doors, with a simple, circular floor motif carved in relief on the small panels at either side. Both the dark finish over the elm wood and the heavy hardware on the doors is original, with a gorgeous, authentic patina. A single, thick shelf is fixed inside with two shallow drawers. The cabinet's simple style and profile make it ideal for storage in any room, perhaps as a drinks cabinet or for bedroom storage.
