Dark Elm Chinese Antique Desk
Shanxi, circa 1880
This simply stated table would most likely have been produced as a desk or painting table for a Chinese scholar. It is made from elm wood and, while the original black finish is still largely intact on the front and sides, the table's top surface has worn to show the paler colour of the wood, with its lovely wide grain and character. The table is in a classic 'Zhuo' style, made with frames and panels and with legs flush with the table corners. The legs taper slightly down to the feet, which are in a typical horse hoof style, while the four wide drawers feature simple moulding and ring handles.
While the drawer handles are recent replacements for the old ones, the table is otherwise in a very original condition, with only the natural wear consistent with its age. It would still work wonderfully today as a wide desk for a home office, or as a large, deep console in a hallway or reception area.
