Dark Elm Bookshelf
Hebei, circa 1900
This beautiful elm bookshelf was originally produced as a cabinet, made in Hebei province in northern China. However, the old doors were broken and unusable. Our antique workshop in China has therefore converted the cabinet into a shelving unit, with two shallow drawers set into the middle shelf and three further shelves - ideal for ornaments or for books. The shelves are open to the sides, with a rear panel, and with thick frames that give it a solid, robust look. The original finish has been updated with dark, rich lacquer to bring out the beautiful wood grain, especially in the two drawers, which have been fitted with simple ring handles.
