Painted Lacquer Wedding Box
Hebei, circa 1950
These boxes are from Hebei province near Beijing, each one finished in red lacquer and beautifully painted with designs that include pheonixes and peony flowers - symbols for good fortune and female beauty. The boxes were traditionally presented in pairs by a mother to her daughter on her wedding day, together with jewellery that would be placed inside. Please note that while similar, each box is individual. The size, shape and colour of each one will vary from the photos, which are meant as an example only. Please contact us if you would like more details of the boxes available.
