Shanxi, circa 1860

This is a lovely example of the large, painted cabinets that were given as part of a bride's dowry along with their contents of fine silks, jewellery and other valuables. Usually referred to as Chinese wedding cabinets, they make wonderful statement pieces in a modern home, with useful storage space inside. The majority of these pieces were produced in Shanxi province - a region famous for the quality of its furniture and beautiful lacquered, painted finishes. In many cases, as here, gold leaf was applied over a painted base in a technique known as 'miao jin' in Chinese. Over the years the gold layer tends to wear away, just leaving the darker base underneath. Here there are still traces of the gold, but the underlying darker paintings of pagoda houses, trees and mountains are more prevalent.

The panel below the doors is decorated in a similar fashion with pomegranates - a common emblem on wedding cabinets like this. The word for seed in Chinese ('zi') also means children, and so, as a fruit that is brimful of seeds, the pomegranate is seen as a fertility symbol and a wish to the newlyweds for many children. The cabinet's outer frames are also painted - the gold now almost entirely worn away to show the base paintings of various flowers. The decorative door hardware and handles are original - unusual for a cabinet of this age as the hardware on most similar pieces is long since lost or was removed for smelting into iron during the 'Great Leap Forward'

The cabinet has a single shelf inside, with the space below extending down behind the lower fixed panel for maximum storage space. A perfect, authentic antique that would make a great accent piece in any setting, with a large amount of storage space inside for anything from bottles and glasses to bedding or clothing.

Aftercare

Lacquered furniture should need little cleaning other than the regular use of a dry, soft cloth or duster. To remove any stains, use a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid the use of too much water as this will affect the surface. Frequent waxing should not be needed but can be carried out every couple of months using a good quality natural beeswax. Do not use the cheaper silicone furniture sprays as these may affect the finish. Never use any abrasive cleaning products or chemicals.

Products in a natural finish can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. Use a natural beeswax every few months to protect and nourish the wood.

Do not place hot or wet items directly onto the product surface as this can mark the finish. Clean any spills as soon as possible.

Avoid placing your furniture near a radiator or other heat source as this can lead to the wood drying out and shrinking, causing cracks or splitting. Ideally, leave at least a metre between your furniture and any heat source. Avoid also placing your furniture in strong, direct sunlight as the colour may fade over time.
