Carved Elm Shanxi Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1860
This beautiful carved cabinet is in its original dark wood finish. Made from elm, it comes from the central Chinese province of Shanxi and has some distinctive characteristics of the region - most noticeably the smaller panels around the doors and rounded frames. The various relief carvings are wonderfully done, showing flowers and vases on the doors and panels. The lower panel is carved with a geometric pattern that incorporates swastikas - a buddhist symbol for good fortune - whilst the apron features intricate, beaded spandrels. The interior includes a single fixed shelf incorporating two small drawers. A quite rare item in wonderful condition given its age, the cabinet would work well as a drinks cabinet or for general storage.
