Antique Elm Storage Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1890
The original dark finish on this antique cabinet has worn in an irregular way to give a uniquely patterned surface. The cabinet is from Shanxi province in central China made from elm wood in a square framed style and solidly built. It would have been used as a storage coffer, with small, centrally placed doors below two shallow drawers that could be secured. While the drawer handles are replacements, the heavy door hinges and small circular escutcheons are old.
The cabinet has a simple, rustic look that would fit easily into many interiors, with a charm and presence resulting from its wonderful aged patina. With a single removable shelf it would work well for storage in a reception room.
