Shanxi Painted Flour Container
Shanxi, circa 1850
This lovely, large sideboard started life in Shanxi province, central China as a storage container for flour or grain. Made from elm wood, it still has its original black lacquer finish and paintings. Originally the interior would have been accessed through a removable plank in the top, but this has been sealed and the four doors added using the old fixed panels. The once vivid paintings of flower vases on the two central doors are now in soft, pastel orange and green, providing a nice focal point. A removable shelf has been added inside. With a lovely patina from the wear and use of 150 years, this would make a stunning dining sideboard or storage unit.
