Painted Red Lacquer Blanket Trunk
Gansu, circa 1860
This old blanket trunk has a painted front panel which shows vases of flowers, fruits and vegetables on a cream background, along with a long inscription. The detailed paintings and cream background contrast beautifully with the vivid orange red and warm browns. The interior of the lid is also painted - possibly later on, and this time with beautiful pink peonies symbolising high rank and status. The trunk is in pine and comes from Gansu in western China, where it would have been used originally to store clothes or other posessions in the home.
