Painted Red Kang Table
Gansu, circa 1920
This cute little table is from Gansu in western China, and would have been used on the kang platform in a Chinese home as a little serving table. Brightly coloured in red lacquer, with carved spandrels and paintings of flowers in cream, green and blue, it would brighten up any space, perhaps used as a small coffee table. Interestingly, the four characters carved into the top surface would have been added at a later date - most likely in the 1960s during the Cultural Revolution. Old furniture was sometimes 'updated' with nationalist slogans in order to prevent destruction during the campaign against the 'Four Olds' initiated by the communist party, and this is a good example.
