Pair of Jumu Side Chairs
Shanxi, circa 1860
These elegant antique side chairs are made from beech wood, known as 'Jumu' in Chinese. The once darker colour has worn or been stripped back to show the paler wood below, although there are still traces of the lacquer on the legs. The chairs have the distinctive, curved 'yoke' shaped crest rails that are so familiar in Chinese design, but unusually the back splats are made up of five rounded stiles rather than a single, wider flat support. The legs of each chair are supported with double braces at the side and a front footrest, while the front curved aprons beneath the seats each show a simple carved motif. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two chairs.
